Minimum Requirements

  • Applicant must be a United States citizen.
  • Applicant must be 21 years old or 21 prior to the completion of the police academy.
  • Applicant must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver license with acceptable driving record.
  • No Class B conviction or court-ordered supervision or probation within the past 10 years.
  • No Class A or Felony conviction or court-ordered supervision or probation.
  • No convictions involving family violence.
  • Applicant who is former military must not have a dishonorable discharge.
  • The applicant's work history must demonstrate honesty, competence, and cooperation, and they must be able to account fully for any periods of unemployment.
  • Applicant must not be engaged in illegal use of drugs.
  • The applicant must not be currently engaged in the abuse of alcohol.
  • No visible tattoos on neck, face or hands.

Police Academy & Field Training

Police Academy
The Police Academy is approximately seven months long. The academy typically operates Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM.

The Academy covers topics ranging from:

  • State/Constitutional Law
  • Traffic Code
  • Professionalism
  • Fitness
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Force Options (OC Spray/Taser, etc.)
  • Firearms
  • Police Driving
  • Patrol Skills
  • Defensive Tactics

Field Training
Following graduation from the police academy, newly sworn-in officers will begin training on the street with a Field Training Officer (FTO). For new officers, field training lasts approximately 15 weeks. Certified officers may spend approximately 9 weeks with an FTO.
